Northern Flickers 1 of 221 views4-19-2008 These Northern Flickers are the Red-shafted species. They are the predominate species in the Spokane area. Occasionally someone will report a Yellow-shafted, but that is pretty uncommon here. You can see the red shafts in the tail feathers of the female in the photo of the courting pair on the snag. The male above is identified by the red malar on the chin area. The other photo shows the male inspecting the hole they have enlarged in this snag on our deck while digging out suet that I have packed inside. Ron Dexter

(Blue) Dusky Grouse13 viewsThe mama makes soft clucking sounds that sound like murr-murr-murr-murr. When she called them to her she used a call that sounded like a cat's meo-ow.
