Bird Bash at Camp Reed
October 10-11, 2025
Spokane Audubon will host a special birding event October 10-11 at Camp Reed on Fan Lake north of Spokane as a new benefit of membership and celebration of Fall Migratory Bird Day.
“Bird Bash” includes Friday dinner, overnight camp-style accommodations, Saturday breakfast and optional lunch, and lots of great birding, hiking, games, socializing, possibly canoeing and more for members and their families at minimal registration fees, supplemented by the chapter.
The YMCA’s Camp Reed, 30 miles north of Spokane in southern Pend Oreille County, is on 555 acres of wetland and woodland habitat on 73-acre Fan Lake. During the summer months, it traditionally hosts camps for children and youth, but during Fall, Winter and Spring it can be rented for reunions, retreats, work meetings and school groups. Camp staff prepare and serve meals in a big kitchen and dining room with fireplace in the main lodge, and overnight accommodations are available in dorm rooms, rustic cabins, and trailer or tent camping sites. (See details at https://ymcainw.org/camp-reed/families-retreats-schools/.)
On this link scroll down to “Amenities” for a list of things available. Then scroll some more to “Facilities Map and Photos” where there is a list of the cabins. Click on a cabin to view a photo of the cabin. Also here is a map of Camp Reed facilities.
Guided bird and other nature walks will accommodate various skill and mobility levels, including children’s activities. Bird counts will be tallied to contribute to the international database for Fall Migratory Bird Day. Canoeing on the lake to enjoy waterbirds closeup is also a possibility. After-dark birding trivia and other games will be held in the lodge. If weather conditions allow, a campfire gathering is also an option.
