I love my State Parks Open House

Spokane House Interpretive Center

Volunteer Jim Harrison holds a captured young eagle before being transported to a local veterinarian for care, likely for dehydration. Extreme heat is challenging for young fledglings who are still learning to hunt. Photo: Bea Harrison

Don’t miss this opportunity to meet a few of your local Save a Bird Team members! Find out why these dedicated volunteers are deeply inspired to save wild birds in our area. They will be joined by many other local non-profit organizations doing meaningful work at this fun and informative event being held at the Spokane House Interpretive Center located off HWY 291 (Nine Mile Road), one half mile North of Charles Road (Nine Mile Falls Dam Bridge).

Washington State Parks is partnering with the National Association of State Park Foundations and Riverside State Park to share the love of our most cherished natural resources--our state parks.

When possible, volunteers try to return young birds who fall from their nests to their parents, instead of transporting them to facilities for care. Each rescue situation is unique. In this case, the original nest was higher than the volunteers could reach. When birds fall out of nests, their parents will still bring them food. The volunteers hoped if they hung a basket close to the original nest and placed the owlet inside, the parents would continue caring for them and the young owl would be safe. Photo credit: Tina Penny
