Big Meadow Lake Camp Out

July 11-14, 2023

Leader: Fran Haywood

509-290-1814 or birders13@gmail.com

Registration date: contact Fran by 7/10/2023

Level of Birder: Everyone is welcome.

Trip Description: There are lots of trails to walk none too strenuous. A short trip over to Bunchgrass Meadows may be a possibility too.

Meet-up time and location: Meet at the campground. Click on the link below for directions and other information about the campground. But please note that there is no potable water at the campground in spite of what the website says. Closest town with water is Ione about 7 miles away. https://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/colville/recarea/?recid=67976

What to bring: Come prepared for hot weather, but also for rain. There can be plenty of mosquitos so bring something to ward off these pests. The lake is shallow and there can be decent fishing and it is a good lake for kayaks or canoes.

Description of Habitat and Target Species: There is a good variety of habitat with riparian areas along Big Meadow Creek, nice coniferous walks and some marshy area too. Fran has seen all 3 vireos there as well as other denizens of coniferous forests such as several woodpecker species, warblers, flycatchers, and barred owl. There won’t be too many ducks but common loons nest there.
